a slovenly male. Jeeter Lester was a quintessentially uncouth rustic charac-ter in Erskine Caldwell's 1932 novel Tobacco Road; his first name became part of New York slang in the 1940s and subsequently spread to other areas. By the 1990s the term was still used, often as part of domestic slang.
